The Zambias Contemporary Culture

February 8, 2010 by free1506

Zambia is a landlocked country in southern Africa. It borders the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the north, Tanzania on the north-east, Malawi on the east, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Namibia to the south, and Angola on the west. Formerly Northern Rhodesia, the country is named after the Zambezi River.

Zambia has one of the lowest populations to land ratios in Africa. Only 10 million people in a country half the size of Europe. The employment opportunities offered in the post independence era in the copper mines and associated industries led to a strong rural-urban migration. The result has been to make Zambia one of the most urbanised countries in Africa. About one fifth of the population lives on the Copper belt to the north of the capital, but the biggest concentration of people is in Lusaka itself with an estimated population of over 2 million. This has resulted in massive tracts of uninhabited land across the country.

Zambias contemporary culture is a blend of values, norms, material and spiritual traditions of more than 70 ethnically diverse people. Most of the tribes of Zambia moved into the area in a series of migratory waves a few centuries ago. They grew in numbers and many travelled in search of establishing new kingdoms, farming land and pastures.

Before the colonial period, the region now known as Zambia was the home of a number of Free states. Each having comprehensive economic links with each other and the outside world along trade routes to the east and west coast of Africa. The main exports were copper, ivory and slaves in exchange for textiles, jewellery, salt and hardware.

During the colonial period, the process of industrialisation and urbanisation saw ethnically different people brought together by economic interests. This, as well as the very definite influence of western standards, generated a new culture without conscious effort of politically determined guidelines.

Many of the rural inhabitants however, have retained their indigenous and traditional customs and values. After Independence in 1964, the government recognised the role culture was to play in the overall development of a new nation and began to explore the question of a National identity.

Institutions to protect and promote Zambias culture were created, including the National Heritage Conservation Commission. Private museums were also founded and cultural villages were established to promote the expression of artistic talents.

Zambias present day culture exhibits a blend of historical and cultural features from the past as well as the present. Traditional African practices and understandings continue to influence many aspects of Zambian culture, mainly in how people act towards elders, marriage guidance and ceremonies.

The Difficulties Facing The Small Restaurants In Mauritius

February 6, 2010 by free1506

Restaurant owners who have their business along the coast depend mostly on the tourism sector. And yet, although arrivals to Mauritius have increase since last year, the situation has remained the same in the restaurants. There is a waiter at La Cravache D’or Restaurant says that even with the increase in tourists in the country but it does not mean that they eat in their restaurant. Most of them like to stay in the hotel for breakfast, lunch and dinner; especially those who only want to relax by the beach or poolside of their hotel. As for the local customers, the owner of the restaurant says that there are less Mauritians because of the rise in the cost of living. There are many factors influencing the decrease in the number of Mauritians in the restaurants. The main reason being everything is getting more and more expensive and so people became choosier in what they eat. They do not just want quality but they would think twice about the cost of what they would eat.

As for the restaurant Au Fin Bec, the Manager says that the number of tourist customers is low at the moment because it is the low season. They usually receive more customers from other countries in the summer, but right now customers coming to eat in their restaurant is rather few because it is the low season. They are waiting for the usual inflow of tourists at the end of July. Whereas the Director of Sakura Restaurant at Grand Baie says that when the low season ends and with the coming of August, tourist from Reunion Island come to visit Mauritius. Before the month of July, they usually have a low season, but during the next few weeks visitors for Reunion Island come to their restaurant to give them a boost.

Rising Competition

However, whether it is low or high season, businessmen who own restaurants have to encounter a high level of competition. It does not matter whether you specialize in Japanese or European or Indian food because people will always seek a place where they can get value for money. There are several Japanese restaurants in Mauritius and they will find the one that gives the best quality for a moderate price. The Director of Sakura also reminds us that though they have increase the variety of menus to give their customer a wider choice, yet the competition has become more and more tough. At the hotels where they have come to stay, the tourists are having whatever they want as food so they is no need for them to move outside the hotels to find some other things else.

Another problem facing the owners of the restaurants is the lack of manpower. Most of the restaurants based in small coastal villages can hardly find people to work for them because the inhabitants in the surrounding area prefer to work in a big hotel. The hotel management can import labor, whereas the small restaurant cannot do so. Most of the chefs are not prepared to work for small restaurants because they are tempted to work for the hotel where they are paid with better remuneration package. The Sakura Restaurant has trained many chefs during the past 21 years, but many of them have left to work for the hotels. As soon as the hotels spot a good chef, they offer them a job in their institution, so the owners of the restaurant have to restart the training of another chef.

I Love Touring Italy – The Marche Region

January 29, 2010 by free1506

If you are looking for a European tourist destination, consider the Marche region of central Italy. Depending on your interests, it is an ideal vacation spot. You can get classic Italian food, and wash it down with fine local wine. And the Marche region hasn’t yet been discovered by tourists. There’s a tradeoff; you won’t have to fight the crowds to see what you want to see. On the other hand, you’ll have a hard time finding fancy hotels. And the roads are not always the best, not much of a surprise when you consider the region’s hilly terrain. We’ll start our tour of this region in the north and work our way south.

The little town of Urbino, formerly a major center of learning, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The University has about twenty thousand students, considerably more than Urbino’s resident population of approximately fifteen thousand. How do you say town and gown in Italian?

Given that the great Renaissance painter Raphael was an Urbino native, it’s not very surprising that this town is home to the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche (National Gallery of The Marche) located in the Palazzo Ducale (Duke’s Palace). Would you believe that this beautiful Renaissance building doesn’t contain much of his work? On the other hand, you can find Titian’s Resurrection and Last Supper there. The Casa Natale di Raffaello (Raphael’s Birthplace) is home to a Madonna fresco that is definitely associated with Raphael. But experts don’t know whether he painted it himself or if in fact his father painted it and Raphael and his mother sat as models. The city also contains several Renaissance churches worth visiting.

Ancona is a port city that was largely destroyed during World War II. But there still are some sights worth seeing including alleys, streets, and city squares. The Duomo di San Ciriaco (Saint Ciriaco Cathedral) was built during the Twelfth Century over a Greek Temple. The Romanesque Santa Maria della Piazza also dates from the Twelfth Century but includes mosaics from a Fifth Century church that it replaced. All these structures are modern compared to the Second Century Arco di Triano (Trajan’s Arch) which announced to all and sundry that they were approaching Rome’s most important port on the Adriatic Sea.

Loreto on the Adriatic Sea is home to a popular shrine, the Santuario della Santa Casa (House of the Virgin Mary) which some say was transported from the city of Nazareth in 1295 to keep it out the hands of the Muslim invaders. The peak pilgrimage periods are Easter week and the Feast of the Holy House on December 10th.

Ascoli Piceno is a valley town of about fifty thousand people. It’s great for pedestrians because cars are forbidden in a large part of the city center. You’ll want to see the Piazza del Populo (Square of the People) and the Thirteenth Century Palazzo dei Capitani del Populo (Palace of the People’s Captains) that now serves as a Town Hall. and the Gothic church San Franceso (Saint Francis). There are several other historic churches. You should really vistit Ascoli Piceno on the first Sunday in August. That’s the day the local residents celebrate the city’s patron saint, Saint Emidio, with a parade of over 900 people dressed in Renaissance costume. After the parade there’s a jousting tournament, Giastra della Quintana, in which six richly costumed knights, representing the city’s six neighborhoods, compete one after the other facing the effigy of a Moor warrior.

What about food? The Marches has many regional specialties, for example Prosciutto di Carpegna, a ham produced near the border of Tuscany, and Vitellone Bianco dell’Appennino Centrale (White Veal of the Central Appenines). The Adriatic coast brings its bounty. One local brodetto (fish soup) calls for thirteen kinds of fish and seafood.

Let’s suggest a sample menu, one of many. Start with Minestra (Chickpea Soup with Pork Ribs and grated Pecorino Cheese). Then try Quaglie in Tegame (Braised Quails with White Wine and Salt Pork). For dessert indulge yourself with Fristenga (Cake with Figs, Raisins, and Walnuts). Be sure to increase your dining pleasure by including local wines with your meal.

We’ll conclude with a quick look at Marche wine. The Marche ranks 12th among the 20 Italian regions for acreage devoted to wine grapes and 10th for total annual wine production. When you read between the lines these numbers indicate that the Marche’s wine output per acre is heavier than the Italian average, not a promising sign for fine wine. Somewhat more than a third of the local wine is red and almost twenty percent of Marche wine is classified as DOC or DOCG wine, described below. The Marche produces thirteen DOC wines. DOC stands for Denominazione di Origine Controllata, which may be translated as Denomination of Controlled Origin, presumably a high-quality wine. It is the home of two DOCG (the G stands for Guarantita) red wines, the Montepulciano-Sangiovese based Rosso Conero Riserva and the Vernaccia di Serrapetrona based on a local grape. Be careful not to confuse the red Vernaccia wine with the white Verdicchio wine.

Identify the best venues, get the best deals, and make your event a great success.

January 27, 2010 by free1506

With the advent of technology and given today’s fast paced life, organising a conference is no longer limited to hiring an auditorium with an overhead projector. In fact, organising any corporate event, especially a conference, involves a lot of planning and strategy. From identifying the number of attendees to selecting a perfect venue to assessing the facilities required, all form a part of organising a perfect conference. If this sounds daunting, do not be dismayed, as there are many specialised agencies that excel in the field of organising conferences. Conference organisers have made this mammoth task very simple by their expertise and efficiency. Whether you are organising a conference in Staffordshire or Essex or Surrey, there are conference organisers that will help you identify the best venues, get the best deals, and make your event a great success.

Professional and successful conference organisers will take care of all aspects of your conference, thereby giving you time to enjoy the entire conference and benefit from it, rather than worry about the logistics. Once the type of conference being organised is decided and also the number of invitees, conference organisers come into the picture and help you plan and implement the entire event. Planning a conference begins by identifying the perfect venue that will suit the needs of the event. Most conference organisers are well resourced and can provide a list of available venues along with the facilities and services and their rates. Choosing a venue becomes very simple with all the information available at hand. However, it is always best to personally visit the venue to ensure that all the aspects advertised by the venue owner are indeed true and would be made available. While selecting and identifying a perfect venue for the conference, conference organisers take into consideration the location of the venue and its accessibility. These two factors are very important, as they decide whether participants to a conference can attend without any apparent difficulty.

The next step in organising a conference, before finalising a venue, is listing the facilities and services provided by the various venues. While looking at the facilities and the services provided at the venues, one should always keep in mind the kind of conference being organised, as this would determine the requirements. A professional and successful conference organiser would predetermine the needs and requirements of the conference and identify a venue that would provide all the facilities required for the conference. These could include audiovisual equipment needed for presentations, a big auditorium, a good podium or stage, and perfect lighting to enhance the event, among other needs. Personal inspection of the venue would help in identifying the other facilities provided by the venue owners. A creative conference organiser will identify certain extra facilities provided by the venue and use it effectively in the conference.

Conference organisers play an important role in selecting the theme and feel of the conference. They provide the creative content that is absolutely necessary to make the conference a successful event. Their activities are not restricted to venue search and logistics, but include handling and managing the delegates, identifying facilitators, and preparing conference material and delegate packs. Once the subject of the conference is conveyed to the conference organiser, designing and preparing subject-related material, identifying eminent speakers on the subject, and requesting their presence for the conference is the duty of the staff, which is highly resourceful and dynamic. The conference organiser ensures that the material being distributed is of good quality, both in terms of content as well as appearance. Once you hire a good conference organiser to handle your conference, they handle everything right from inviting the delegates for the conference to registration of delegates to collecting delegate fee and finally making sure that the delegates are comfortably placed in their respective accommodations during the conference. They also make sure that the invitees are well aware of the itinerary of the conference and are given their delegate packs on arrival. Even while compiling the delegate packs, the conference organisers take utmost care to see that all the material is properly placed and nothing is left out. Most organisers even cater to the entertainment needs of the delegates by choosing a venue that has varied options that would both intrigue and benefit the attendees of the conference.

Finally, the conference organisers provide onsite help during the conference for the smooth running of the conference and to iron out any problems that may arise during the course of the event. This helps the delegates to attend, enjoy, and benefit from the conference without any hassle. Apart from the actual services provided during the conference, organisers also help in marketing and PR of the conference. In some cases, where necessary, the conference organisers also help in obtaining sponsorships for the conference. In short, they provide expert holistic support to the conference being organised by a corporate.

History of Hua Hin, Thailand

January 27, 2010 by free1506

Hua Hin, literally meaning ’stone head’ in Thai, is one of the oldest as well as the most popular beach resorts in the country, situated on the west coast of the Gulf of Thailand. Located about 200 km south of Bangkok and 85 km from the provincial capital, this resort town is much favored for its serene atmosphere comprising striking vistas, tranquil beaches, rainforest jungles, stunning caves, crystal clear water and clean white sand.

Once a typical fishing village, Hua Hin has now transformed into a well-established beach resort coupled with first-class facilities and traditional Thai hospitality. Attractions, among many others, are National Parkland of more than 2000 sq km and Teakwood Palace, which is 12 km south of Hua Hin. Hua Hin also provides excellent options to enjoy a range of activities such as elephant trips, fishing, beach cycling, snorkeling, and horse riding. Besides, Hua Hin is a golfer’s paradise, with world-class golf courses such as Royal Hua Hin Golf Course and Lake View Golf Course.

Hua Hin boasts of a rich history. Throughout its history, Hua Hin has been known by different names such as Ban Samoe Rieng, Samoriang and Ban Laem Hin, until it got its present name in 1911.

In the late 19th century, a better option for traveling was introduced here, with the passing of the Siam Orasumphol – the first steamer – through many small communities along the Gulf of Thailand. The resort’s royal connection, that has still to this day, began during the turn of the 20th century when Prince Chakrabhongse, a member of the royal family, came here for a hunting trip. Impressed with the tranquility of the area, he built a beach villa, which was first of its kind in Hua Hin.

However, the history of Hua Hin’s transformation as a luxurious seaside resort dates back to 1903 when a railroad connecting Hua Hin to Bangkok was built here as a part of the Southern Railroad. As a result, the destination enjoyed the convenient access and it gradually began to draw the attention of nobilities such as members of royal people and aristocrats from the nation.

The first person to recognize the unequaled beauty of the place was Prince Nares, who served as the Minister of Public Works during the reign of King Rama V. As a result, he constructed an elegant residence, namely, the Saen Samran Royal Residence in 1911 at the southern end of Lam Hin Village. Subsequently, another bungalow, named Ban Plub Pa, was built by Prince Tewawongworapakorn nearby the Saen Samran. Again within a period of five years, a series of stunning bungalows were built by other members of the Royal Family at the northern end of the village.

In 1916, during the reigns of King Rama V and VI, the construction of southern railway line connecting Siam to British Malaya was completed. This in turn spurred the popularity of the place, and many elites of Bangkok society began to flock to Hua Hin.

However, until 1922, there were only limited accommodation and dining facilities for passengers taking a break at Hua Hin Railway Station. Understanding the problems, Prince Purachatra – the then Director General of the State Railway – took steps to provide better lodging and dining facilities.

As an outcome, in 1923, the Railway Hotel – a graceful Victorian structure coupled with a superb continental restaurant – was opened, which is today’s Sofitel Central Hotel. Soon after this, the then king commissioned for road maintenance in order to build a golf course opposite the railway station. This led to the establishment of the country’s first standard golf course, the Royal Hua Hin Golf Course. Later, the much famed night market, Talad Chatchai was opened.

After sometimes, inspired by the pristine beauty as well as natural surroundings of the place, Prince Prajadhipok commanded for the construction of Klai Kangwon Palace, even prior to his accession to the throne as Rama VII. On the completion of its construction, the palace was named Klaikangwon, meaning ‘far from worries,’ which in turn is still used by the members of the Royal Family.

Year after year, more and more attractions were introduced in the area by the Royal Family. Consequently, Hua Hin gradually shot to fame and became one of the sought after destinations, frequently visited by aristocrats from different parts of the country. Al though, badly affected by the World War II, Hua Hin managed to recover.

Today, Hua Hin is undoubtedly a holiday destination of international stature. Despite its amazing growth and development as a splendid tourist destination, Hua Hin still continues to be a peaceful sanctuary, maintaining rich as well as royal Thai roots.

The Taj Mahal, for instance, is one of the biggest tourist attractions in India, as well as in that part of the world. It is one of the finest examples of Mughal architecture as well as the architecture of the South Indian area. This is one of the most visited sites in India. Because of the many different ethnic groups that have had a hand in the history and shaping of the country, most of the tourist attractions and important sites are multicultural.

Tourism

One reason that you might want to book a flight to India is for tourism. Tourism is one of the biggest industries in India, and there are numerous interesting sites you might want to visit while in India. One of the sixth wounders in the world today is the Taj Mahal, and it is a massive tourist attraction in India. It is one of the finest examples of Mughal architecture as well as the architecture of the South Indian area. This is one of the most visited sites in India. Because of the many different ethnic groups that have had a hand in the history and shaping of the country, most of the tourist attractions and important sites are multicultural.

Music is another important aspect of Indian tourism, and could be one of the main reasons to book a flight to India. The music in India incorporates a wide diversity of regional styles and ethnic traditions. For instance, the north Indian Hindustani and the South Indian Carnatic traditions blend together to form the classical music styles that you will most often hear in India. However, there is also film, folk, and popular music.

Dance is another important aspect of tourism. Here too, there is a wide range of various traditions and styles, similar to the way that music is portrayed. The literature of India is another important aspect of tourism, and there are many different cultural festivals that revolve around singing, dancing, and the great writers of the area. Many poets, authors, artists, and philosophers were born in India.

History

Another reason why a person might take a flight to India is to look at various historical sites. For instance, the Amba Vials Palace at Mysore is one of the largest centers of fine arts in all of India. Another area in India that is visited frequently by tourists and backpackers is Bollywood. Bollywood, located in Bombay, is a major site of film history. Films have been produced here since the early 20th century. Today, there are a number of theaters and cinemas that are located throughout India. There are several notable ones as well, including the largest IMAX Theater in the world.

New Delhi is also an important area in India because of its fascinating history. Delhi itself is a city that is split into two. Old Delhi has been inhabited since the early civilzations may many diiferent rules of different faiths, the city is one of the oldest in the world. It reflects the ancient history of India and the surrounding area – complete with ancient walls, trading routes, and other archeological sites. New Delhi, on the other hand, is a fairly new city in terms of historical significance, built during the British Raj. This city, as a result, has a history that is completely different, and completely at the other end of the historical spectrum. Delhi itself is one of the main places where a flight to India might take you.

The countryside in India also attracts a lot of tourist interest because of its historical significance. Many rural areas have not changed very little for 100 of years. However, if you are taking a flight to India, you should make sure that you have a guide available if you plan on going into the countryside. Quite often, traveling out of the cities can be extremely difficult for tourists who don’t know the area.

Religion

Religion is another reason why people may take a flight to India. In fact, religion plays an important part in the culture of India. There are many different religious or spiritual sites all over India. For instance, in Bombay, there are many sites, such as the Golden Temple, which are very important to the Sikh religion. There are also a number of Hindu temples all around the area.

One of the reasons that religion is an important aspect for visitors is that each religion has its own temples and sites. Part of the reason that religion in India is such a major draw for tourists and historians is that it is very old. There have been people living in this area of the world for almost as long as history itself has been written. Because of this, many of the foundations of the important religious ideals were made in this area. The historical significance of religion in India has become one of the biggest draws for tourists from around the world.
